大静思烛 Tearless Candles (Big)
静思烛，源于证严法师修行之初，于灯燃供佛时，发觉传统蜡烛烛泪涔涔，烛油滴在桌面上，既不惜福又不易清洗，因而思考：如何让烛灭油尽，完全燃烧？又如何使烛心点燃时没有黑烟及异味？凭此一念惜福之心，开始展开一连串的研发历程。
最初，试将煮溶的蜡油倒入杯中，但冷却后却拿不出来。后来改成以纸板弯成纸圈盛装蜡油，冷却脱模后，表面却凹凸不平，不宜供佛。
也曾到山里锯竹子作为容器，蜡烛成型后，剖开竹筒，发现也是粗粗糙糙不够光滑，甚至有时还会产生气泡⋯
直到1981年，在证严法师的智慧巧思下，以养乐多空罐当模具，以香为烛芯，待蜡油凝固冷却后，拨下养乐多罐，包上透明纸外衣，静思烛于焉诞生。静思烛不仅火光稳定，不冒青烟，蜡油也可完全燃尽，烛身不再垂满烛泪，所以也叫做「不掉的蜡烛」。
早期慈济开始做慈善工作时候，精舍的生活仍相当拮据。经济上的困难，大家都克勤克俭点就可勉强撑过去；但推动志业时所遇到的挫折以及外界的误解，最是折磨人心！有一次，证严法师心脏病发作，加上为大众事的忧虑，身心备受煎熬。起身看着佛桌上的蜡烛，燃烧自己、照亮别人，给证严法师很大的体悟。

Jing Si Candle
The origin of the Jing Si Candle dates back to the early days of Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s spiritual practice. While making candlelight offerings to the Buddha, she noticed that traditional candles would drip wax tears onto the altar—a sign of both wastefulness and difficulty in cleaning. This led her to reflect: How can a candle burn completely, leaving no wasted wax? And how can its wick burn without emitting black smoke or unpleasant odors? Driven by this mindful desire to cherish blessings, she began a series of experiments.
At first, she tried pouring melted wax into a cup, but once cooled, the candle could not be removed. Then, she curved cardboard into a ring to hold the wax, but after cooling and demolding, the surface turned out uneven and unsuitable as an offering.
She even went into the mountains to cut bamboo as a container. Yet, when the bamboo was split open after the wax hardened, the candle remained rough and imperfect, sometimes even forming air bubbles inside...
It was not until 1981 that Dharma Master Cheng Yen, with her wisdom and ingenuity, came up with a solution: using empty Yakult bottles as molds and incense sticks as wicks. Once the wax solidified and cooled, the bottles were removed, and the candles were wrapped in transparent paper. Thus, the Jing Si Candle was born. It burns steadily, without releasing smoke, and the wax is fully consumed, leaving no tears of wax along the sides—hence it is also known as the “Tear-Free Candle.”
In the early days of Tzu Chi’s charitable work, life in the Abode was still quite frugal. Financial challenges could be overcome through diligence and thrift, but the setbacks encountered in carrying out the mission, along with misunderstandings from the outside world, weighed heavily on the heart. On one occasion, Dharma Master Cheng Yen suffered a heart attack, and the burden of responsibilities for the well-being of others left her physically and emotionally drained. Rising to her feet, she gazed at the candle on the altar—burning itself out to illuminate others—and in it, she found profound inspiration.
