About Author
Dharma Master Cheng Yen was born in 1937 in a small town in Taichung County, Taiwan. When she was twenty-three years old, she left home to become a Buddhist nun, and was instructed by her mentor, Venerable Master Yin Shun, to work “for Buddha’s teachings, for sentient beings.” In 1966, she founded a charity, which later turned into the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, to “help the poor and educate the rich”—to give material aid to the needy and inspire love and humanity in both givers and recipients.

In recent years, Master Cheng Yen’s contributions have been increasingly recognized by the global community. In 2011, she was recognized with the Roosevelt Institute’s FDR Distinguished Public Service Award and was named to the 2011 TIME 100 list of the world’s most influential people. In 2014, she was presented with Rotary International’s Award of Honor in recognition of her humanitarian efforts and contributions to world peace.

An Honest Merchant—Dharma Master Tells Stories [Bilingual Text with pinyin] adapted from original Chinese edition is a work by Tzu Chi USA Editorial & Translation Team. The delicate illustration adds to the attractiveness of the storylines, so that children older than 7 can easily teach themselves to read the bilingual text, and general adults who are interested in language learning can also learn English/Chinese through the lively Dharma Master Tells Stories series.

This children’s book is composed of two stories. In the story of “An Honest Merchant”, there was a poor family, declined from 5 generations of wealth, in which only an old lady barely supported her granddaughter. One day, the old lady wanted to trade an old bowl with a merchant, in exchange for a small jade necklace for her granddaughter. Little did she know that the gold bowl was very valuable. Two merchants, Wang Wu and Zhang Ying respectively found out the value of this golden bowl; however two of them reacted differently due to their attitudes, one cheated while the other remain honest. Guess who got the golden bowl in the end? Through the interesting stories, Dharma Master Cheng Yen teaches children the disciplines of doing right things and treating people with kindness; and only when we uphold the kindness in mind, can we have a content and happy life.
